Do I Need My Hours to be Completed with a Master Electrician to Apply for the Journeyman License?

I found this question on a page for electricians on Facebook, and was surprised to see many varying answers.  Most of them were correct and some were guessing trying to help. “Does anyone know if the 8000 hours are required to be completed with a master electrician to apply for the journeyman license since i know most plants have only journeyman and im thinking about doing industrial and want to get my hours to become a journeyman.” Here is how you can apply for the journeyman electrician license: You have to complete 8,000 hours in order to be able to apply for your journeyman license.  The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations(TDLR) has a form attached to the application for your proof of hours.  Reach out to your past employers and ask them to fill out the form.  Answer the application honestly and attach as much supporting documentation as needed or required. Once your application is complete, include your application fee and send it off...

Electrical Code Question and Exemptions - Don’t Get Fooled

Electrical Code question for the electrical license exam.  This tip is absolutely one of the major tips I've got to share with you. And that is NEC code question exceptions. If you look on the Candidate Information Bulletin from PSI, you will see a major note under examination reference material. It says “when responding to the test questions DO NOT consider code exceptions, unless the test question specifically directs you to consider them”. That is a very critical note, many fellows fall for this trick in these types of NEC code questions. Perfect Example of This Tricky Electrical Code Question Just about every electrician has done overhead service at least once in their lifetime career.  What is your normal average height above a rooftop? If you had a NEC code question that asked you what the minimum distance is, what would you answer? 3  6  8  10  3 feet because that's how we do it all the time. I have done two in my lifetime ...

When is the best time to take the PSI electrical exam?

Guys ask me all the time, “When is the best time to take the PSI electrical exam after taking the class?” The answer used to be about five days to go over the handouts from the class and to read a few important articles of the code book. In the class we give you a list of articles you MUST read. After the class you get homework. You’ll need to spend time daily for practice. Ideally you should dedicate 1 hour a day or night. Then after those 5 days, the longest you want to wait is about 14 to 21 days. Three weeks is kind of stretching it. If you wait longer than that you risk forgetting some of the things covered in the class. If you think you’ll forget sooner, then push for no longer than ten days. What if I already scheduled my PSI electrical exam? If you've already scheduled the PSI electrical exam, don't worry about it. Worst case, you go in there and see the exam. The PSI electrical exam fee is 78 dollars. So if you don’t pass the first time it m...

Do This Before Re-Taking The Electrical Licence Exam

When you go back to retake your electrical license test, make sure to wait no more than 2 months. The best time to retake the exam is between 1 week to 2 months. How different will the electrical license test be the 2nd time? The second time around, you can expect to see up to 70% of new questions. This means that most of the questions you saw on the first try might not appear this time. This also means you might see 30% of the same or similar questions as before. What is the difference the second time around? There are some great things about retaking the electrical license test. You already know what to expect and have the experience. Checking in will be a breeze and you will already know the instructions and rules. This time around you’ll know exactly how to manage your time. As you know, this is crucial to answer all of the questions in the test. Leaving unanswered questions count against you. Since you have already taken the test before, you are familiar with how ...

Electrical Exam Book Trick To do Right Now with Brief Notes

When you go take your electrical license exam, you are allowed to bring your code book in. There are a few rules though. For the Texas exam, the NEC book must be: Softbound Any tabs must be permanent, not post it notes.  Highlights are allowed  Brief notes are allowed  Let’s clarify and talk about the short notes that are allowed to be written in your NEC book.   As far as the short notes go, the rule is that you CAN write in your NEC book. They just don't want you to have a whole page of notes in the very back in the blank pages.   They also don’t want you to have sticky notes or additional pages glued to your NEC book. Back in the day many guys would do all sorts of things that helped them pass the exam.  Some would turn their softbound NEC books into spiral NEC books. Others would spiral them with additional pages slipped in there, you know, before the spiraling process began. Now we know why spiral bound ...
