Electrical Exam Book Trick To do Right Now with Brief Notes

When you go take your electrical license exam, you are allowed to bring your code book in. There are a few rules though.

For the Texas exam, the NEC book must be:

  • Softbound
  • Any tabs must be permanent, not post it notes.
  • Highlights are allowed
  • Brief notes are allowed

Let’s clarify and talk about the short notes that are allowed to be written in your NEC book.

As far as the short notes go, the rule is that you CAN write in your NEC book. They just don't want you to have a whole page of notes in the very back in the blank pages.

They also don’t want you to have sticky notes or additional pages glued to your NEC book.

Back in the day many guys would do all sorts of things that helped them pass the exam.  Some would turn their softbound NEC books into spiral NEC books. Others would spiral them with additional pages slipped in there, you know, before the spiraling process began.

Now we know why spiral bound NEC books aren’t allowed anymore.  You can’t bring in a ring binder copy of the NEC either.

So when in doubt on the handwritten notes, limit your notes to about a single note per article that you write about.

For example, if you're gonna do steps for your calculations, like we go through the seminars. Just write the steps next to the article that they go to so that they're kind of spread throughout.  This way your notes are not all on one page.

5 tips for writing notes in the nec book for the electrical exam

Tips:
  • Write steps of calculations next to the article that they go to.
  • Spread notes throughout the NEC book.
  • Write towards the inside column, there is more empty space there.
  • Write in BLACK ink only. Usually testing centers give you blue ink or pencil.

This way you don’t have anything written in your NEC book that they might accidentally mistake as something that you wrote down during the exam.  It's really not worth the risk.

Texas Electricians- The End is Near- How to Avoid Getting Lost in the Shuffle

How to Avoid Getting Lost in the Shuffle If you haven't heard that the end of the 2011 NEC Exams is coming up, then you've been living under a rock or working way too hard. That's right guys, if you have applied to take your exam but have not yet passed or even taken the exam, you have a deadline.  As of September 1, 2014, the TDLR will only accept and recognize the 2014 version of the  National Electrical Code ®  on the field and in the testing site.  The exam will be based on the 2014 version of the book, you will still be allowed to bring in your 2011 but we do not recommend that.  If you already have your 2014, you must have already noticed that there a great deal of updates on the code.  Your first clue should be the number of pages, the book has gotten BIGGER! We have the last few seminars already lined up, there is limited seating and I strongly recommend that you reserve a seat.  Alternatively, if you don't have time for a seminar and...
